時をかけるGoogle

　グーグルがまた心憎いコンテンツを始めた。その名はNews Archive Search。西暦１７００年以降の現存する新聞や雑誌の記事を検索してしまおうというサービスだ。今のところ英語版のみだが、結構遊べる。
　たとえば「japan」で検索してみると、最古のものとしてこんな記事が出てきた。

　古い英語であるせいもあり、内容はよくわからないが「エジンバラ・クロニクル」という新聞が１７５９年１０月８日の報道ということが読み取れる。アメリカ建国の１７年前であり、名前から察するに英国の新聞だろうか。ちなみにこの頃の日本はというと、江戸中期、９代将軍徳川家重の時代。暴れん坊将軍吉宗が死んで１０年くらいたった頃である。
　もう一つ「hirohito」で検索してみたらこんな記事が出てきた。

　昭和天皇が皇太子だった当時の欧州訪問の様子を報じたワシントンポストの記事である。
　ほかにも、「hirobumi ito」「meiji」などの単語で検索すると歴史マニアの興味をかき立てそうなくだりが次々に出現する。ぜひ日本語版も実現してほしいものだが壁は厚い気もする。
